Diabetes Education

Diabetes education is a program where people with diabetes learn to care for themselves in ways that will help them optimally manage this lifelong disease. Diabetes requires adjustment to a treatment plan as times goes on. Each individual has choices about how to manage his or her blood sugars to optimize health. Diet, blood sugar testing, exercise, body weight maintenence, and medications can be used to keep blood sugars at recommended levels. When and how each individual uses these tools is a matter of personal choice. Our goal is to work with clients to create a plan that can be maintained over time.

You can benefit from our program if you are:

  • newly diagnosed with diabetes;
  • having high blood sugar readings or a high hemoglobin A1C, and need to reassess your diabetes care; or
  • starting insulin or other diabetes medication.

How the Program Works

The diabetes educator and dietitian will meet with you individually to get to know you and your current diabetes care. Subsequent appointments may be needed to monitor your progress. Group classes are offered for those newly diagnosed, as well as for those needing to review and update their knowledge.

Location/directions

The diabetes education office is located on the second floor of the 1929 building. Parking is most convenient off Sheridan Street, near the old main entrance to the hospital. Entering here, turn right at the "T". Take another right and go to the second floor, via the elevator. Walk through the gym; the office will be on your left at the end.
